This is not an upscale place but rather a sweet, traditional and charming place to really relax. The private onsens were great- our favourite being the outdoor one, which was absolutely magical in the rain. The place is very quiet with staff who seem to aim to keep out of your way as much as humanly possible, but are very kind and helpful. A really lovely stay! It's not in any of the central hubs of Hakone but near to the hike up Mount Kintoki and literally next to a bus stop to get you to other places in the area.

Hakone is a pricey area, and even though this property is at the lower end of the budget in comparison to other places it was a splurge to us! If you are used to high end luxury, Mitake is not for you. This property is like going to stay at your grandparents house - they might not have all the 'mod cons' and decor and furniture is a little tired and dated, but it's a warm, charming place to be, and everyone is friendly! The room that we stayed in was HUGE - by far the biggest in Japan!! We even had a separate sitting area! There is a public and private onsen which are open 24 hours. The town its self is extremely quiet but we were there for the scenery - not the nightlife! If you are not eating at the property, there are a couple of restaurants to choose from within walking distance (one being a fab little Italian!) There is a bus stop directly outside the property which makes sightseeing a breeze! We thoroughly enjoyed our stay!

There are two private onsen and two outdoor shared onsen (one for each gender). One of the private onsen is also outdoors, which we found nice, although it is enclosed in a small terrace with no view. We used the private onsen in the afternon, in the evening and in the morning, and found that only once the outdoor one was occupied, while the indoor one was always free. The room has a nice view on the garden and it faces a quiet location. The dinner, served in the room, was plentiful and included many different dishes.

Came to Hakone in the snowy day and all i need was the warmest and peaceful ryokan Mitake. I'd like Japan traditional house with tatami, futon and especially the kotatsu. Mitake has it all with the unbelievable price. Unfortunately the outdoor onsen had been closed when we stayed but no problem, the indoor onsen was still great. Station stopping only 10 meters from the hotel. Staffs were too lovely and very understanding of our lack of familiarity with Japanese customs and language. the Ryokan offered yukatas that you can wear during the stay, we felt like we were in a movie, love it! Wish I could stay more nights in there.

Traditional dinner was excellent. There were both indoor and outdoor private Onsens. At first I was afraid it would be hard to get there, but there is a 'T' bus going from Odawara Station stopping 20 meters from the hotel. There are great hiking trails nearby, we climbed Kintoki and followed the ridge south for a couple of hours.

Good location, nice room - it had a kotatsu, which was really useful and fun to use. The onsen was available all night (they have private onsen). They provide you with yukata to wear inside.

The staff were great and very understanding of our lack of familiarity with Japanese customs and language. They let us drop off our luggage early to go exploring which was very helpful. The meals are very generous ( we couldn't finish everything), and the people are very kind.

Great ryokan with great people. Yes it is a bit old but still charming with super nice staff and very good food.
