    A truly beautiful experience all round. It’s an oasis filled with bird and plant life. The views of the mountains are breathtaking. Accommodation luxurious with a log burner. I loved the meals which were prepared with love and eaten in a group in the beautiful authentic dining room.

    The royal welcome, the isolation, swimming in the dam, the walks, the pool, the Edwardian (not Victorian!?) architecture, the hosts, the birds, the silence, having our car washed.

    Beautiful location in the valley. Wish we could have stayed longer and done some of the walks that are recommended. Delicious meal in the evening on the veranda and it is nice to meet the other guests. Lovely breakfast too. Staff were very friendly and welcoming. A place where you can really connect with the Karoo.

    The welcome was outstanding and the hospitality was genuine. The collective atmosphere of dinner, with all guests sitting 'club table' style and enjoying wide ranging conversations and exchange of views was a high point for us. Our stay was too short to enable us to enjoy the various walks and hikes around the estate, but other guests spoke warmly of their experiences.

    Fantastic location,if you can bring yourself to drive 19 km down an unmade road. Very quiet, a real retreat. And the owners look after you splendidly.

    What a wonderful spot. Remote but well worth the effort of getting there. Loved swimming in the dam and early morning walking trails. Fantastic night sky. Wonderful sociable evenings around the long table on the veranda. The bird feeding cabaret at breakfast. The wine and food were excellent.

    Beautifully situated about 20km along a gravel road from Calitzdorp in a lovely remote valley. Excellent walks on well marked trails of varying lengths and good bird watching, including in the garden while having breakfast! Good food too.

    The location of The Retreat, friendly welcome, delightful accommodation, swimming in The Dam, walking among the mountains. Convivial & delicious dinner on the veranda with other guests, sunny breakfast watching the birds.
